Back again with another of these music-related digital sketches, this time depicting possibly my favourite DJ/Producer/Hip-Hop Instrumentalist, DJ Shadow.
My first exposure to DJ Shadow came as a result of hearing 'Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt' on the radio. I was completely blown away by the multi layered samples, the haunting vocals and those heavy, heavy beats. Up to this day I would still say it is high in my top 10 of all-time favourite tunes.
I obviously found 'Endtroducing' and was opened up to a whole new world of instrumental goodness. I still pull this album out and marvel at how it continues to stand the test of time. Shadow takes samples and does unique things with them that I think others have duplicated, but never really bettered. I don't really think he's done a bad project since, but I'd have to say that after 'Endtroducing', 'The Private Press' and 'Psyence Fiction' (In collaboration with James Lavelle as UNKLE are the albums that still really resonate with me.
Regarding the drawing, I really enjoyed doing this, and could quite possibly have noodled away at it forever. I keep having to remind my self that these are all just part of the first stage of a much more involved piece of work! Suffice to say that I'm fairly pleased with it. However, as always, whether I've been truly successful in my depiction is for others to decide.
