The latest addition to my series of music-themed portraits, this time featuring 90s RnB legend, the late Aaliyah.
Like most folk, my introduction to Aaliyah was the hit record 'Back & Forth' where she was presented as the musical protege of R.Kelly. The production aside, I loved her smooth tones and always felt she had something about her that made her different from most other female RnB singers of the time. Although she was quite young, there was an air of mystery about her, with her hair always covering one eye, leading to many ridiculous stories about what afflicted her.
Although I liked a fair amount of her work in that early period, it was her collaborations with Timbaland that really made me a fan. "One In A Million' is possibly my favourite ballad of all time, due to its, in my opinion, left field production, and her haunting vocals. From this point, she dropped hit after hit with Timbaland, the tracks being danceable, but also sonically interesting and unique.
Aside from making great records, she was always, to me, the natural successor to Janet Jackson. She could dance and perform and always dropped a hot video. I always wonder how popular artists such as Beyonce and Rihanna would have been had Aaliyah not passed tragically in 2001.
Regarding the image itself, this took a little while to complete, as I started it while on holiday in Barbados, and finished it a week after returning home. I really enjoyed the process and I'm relatively pleased with the final result, even though there are a few things I intend to improve when I have the time.
As usual, below are a few process pics and some clips of my favourite Aaliyah moments.
As always, enjoy!
