A long time between posts I know, but here is another of my music-related portraits, this time of EDM kings Daft Punk!
My first exposure to Daft Punk was coming in late from many a night out as a much younger guy, where the video for 'Around The World' always seemed to be on rotation on 'The Box'. I loved the groove and the repetitive yet complex dance routine that complimented the track. I sought out 'Homework' and immediately fell in love with their work.
A few summers on 'One More Time' came out and my head was blown, especially with the anime-inspired video that accompanied it. Little did I know that it was a part of a larger musical animated film set to the 'Discovery' album called 'Interstellar 5555', overseen by anime/manga legend Leiji Matsumoto! I've always loved 'Discovery as an album and don't think there's a bad track on there.
Their later work, to my ears has only gotten better and better. I absolutely adore the TRON:LEGACY soundtrack, which is vastly superior to the actual film. The release of 'Get Lucky' featuring Pharrell Williams was my jam for that summer, one of the best dance tracks ever. 'Random Access Memories' is very much a 'throwback' album that reaches back into the past, but it has plenty of their signature style and flavour.
This piece was one of the longest to complete, as I was doing it between lots of different things, and I had a fair amount of trouble with all of the reflective surfaces. I'm pretty happy with the final outcome though, and could have carried on noodling it forever, but there comes a time when you have to let an image go.
Below are some images of the different stages of making the image, as well as clips of some of my favourite Daft Punk moments.
As always, enjoy!
