The latest in my series of music themed sketch portraits, this time featuring one of the most unique producers of modern times, Timbaland.
The first time Timbaland came to my attention was upon listening to 'One In A Million' by Aaliyah. This record completely freaked me out with it's (at the time) original use of beats, with that signature 'boom-ta-boo-ta-boom-boom' sound that would soon be replicated, but never bettered. What was even more crazy is that those beats were used in that way on a ballad! Suffice to say, I needed to find out who had given Aaliyah this amazing sounding track.
Alongside the work with Aaliyah, his early collaborations with Missy Elliott were nothing but joy to my ears. What they did at the time with tracks like 'The Rain', Sock It To Me' and 'Get Ur Freak On' were a real breath of fresh air at the time.
I could go on and on about his work with many folks, Ginuwine, Nicole Wray, Nelly Furtado, Bubba Sparxx and so many others, but it would be more like an essay rather than a blog post. All I will say is that he has brought a creativity and originality to commercial pop music that I've found pretty inspirational over the years.
Regarding the drawing itself, I really enjoyed doing this, and for once I'm relatively pleased with the results.
