The latest in my series of music-themed portraits, this time depicting one of the great characters of music, Minneapolis funk master Morris Day!
The first time I saw Morris was as Prince's adversary in Purple Rain, and I loved his humour and double act with Jerome Benton. He was flash, cool and funny as hell in that film! I then went and did further investigation and listened to his work with The Time and discovered that he wasn't just a fun gimmicky guy, but had some real tunes to offer.
I remember when 'Fishnet' came out, loving the track and video and the fact that my favourite production team at the time (Jam & Lewis) were so heavily involved. I always thought Morris was destined for more greatness, but many seemed to have slept on him. I think he's a criminally underrated and unappreciated artist.
Regardless, he's a hero of mine and I had a ball trying to do him justice. I went a bit over the top trying to do the jacket and other stuff, but it's all part of the look. He just wouldn't be Morris to me without it. Below I've decided for once to show some of the progress as this went along as well as some of my favourite Morris Day moments.
As always, enjoy!
